After the busyness of summer, fall seems like a chance to get back to my roots as a homebody. However, that doesn’t mean I’m just staying home with my family! I love having people over too! There are so many great opportunities in fall to get together – whether it’s birthdays, holidays, sporting events, fire pits, or movie nights.
Sometimes our hesitation to host guests can stem from the fact that cleaning and decorating our home feels like too much of a chore. While I’ve already posted about my quick cleaning tips , I also wanted to share with you the three areas of your home that have the most power when decked out in fall decor. (Speaking of alcoholic beverages, try this amazing Harvest Punch , which has everything you need in your life right now—apples! Oranges! Pomegranates! And with all the vitamin C, it’s practically a cold-fighting beverage, too.)
And don’t feel like you’re doing this just for someone else! I decorate my house this way every year just because I love it, and the kids love it too. Now let’s get started!
Decorating your front porch for fall

This is the space my kids are excited to decorate for fall! I think it’s because it really signals the approach of the holiday season. There’s something so “leaving an impact” about the holidays, no matter what age you are. And what’s better than a front porch covered in pumpkins?! I’ve had real pumpkins before, and it’s fun to go to the farmers market and pick them out. Last year, I bought a fake pumpkin patch because the “fake fall” in North Carolina meant my real pumpkins were going to rot a little early in the heat. It was an investment, but even Chris couldn’t tell that they weren’t real!
For our plantings, I like to replace either a large pot of tulips or a deep pot of faux stems with darker shades to add some height behind the pumpkins. I don’t usually go for a seasonal doormat, but I have been known to add a coir mat in front. Then to make the look a little spooky in October, I like to add some non-spooky ghosts that can withstand the weather (bonus points if they light up!)
Inviting all the senses in the fall kitchen

In the fall, the kitchen feels more like “home” or the Danish idea of “hygge,” a sense of comfort and contentment with life’s quiet pleasures. It’s all about soft lighting, seasonal colors, and fragrant scents. I love lighting tapered candle holders or new lanterns that I use on the counter to brighten up small corners as the daylight shortens in the late afternoon and evening. Swap out dish towels for something more somber, like a dark patterned fabric.

This is when copper utensils and wooden kitchen tools really come into season. Wooden salt and pepper mills, stacks of copper mixing bowls, a wooden cake stand—these warm colors up the coziness factor tenfold. A wooden bowl filled with pears is a designer look that’s so sophisticated yet so easy. There’s a reason pears are a staple in still lifes! Or you can use bright red apples for their eye-catching (and lasting) appeal. I love filling any space on my open shelves with mini pumpkins—faux or real—in shades of yellow, beige, and charcoal green. This is also the perfect time to toss in some fall snacks, like candy corn and candy mix in a glass pumpkin or bowl.
In addition to the fake or real candles mentioned above, grab a scented candle with a warm cinnamon or amber scent and let it glow. You can try placing a pot of rosemary, orange, cinnamon, and cloves on the stove to add some fragrant, nature-like scents. You can also display a fall-themed recipe on a cookbook stand, and of course, it’s the perfect season to bake or cook something delicious (here are 24 fall recipes to get you started!)
If you’re hosting, here’s some inspiration for setting a cheerful fall table that will make your guests feel right at home.
Enjoy a comfortable living room

Having a last-minute over? The living room is one of the main spaces to freshen up. And it’s easy to make a “fall” makeover with just a few additions. Texture is so important in the living room. It’s all about soft throw blankets, sculptural branches (use big throw blankets like these and make them pop!), and bright accents on the mantel. You can easily add bamboo, rattan, or cane—anything woven that looks artisanal and traditional.

Add layers of cozy accent seating! I often stock up on extra blankets and pillows in the spring and summer to brighten up a room. But now? Go wild! Bring out those patterned blankets or those plush throws you’ve been folding—anything that draws people toward your couch or comfy chair. Tassels, throws, or large looped pillows add some great texture, too. If you have some books or leather accents, this would be a great time to display them on your coffee table with a box of matches and a candle or two.
Shopping in the living room
I love to evoke the feel of an old English countryside at this time of year (hint: I would add some wood beams, fresh paint or paneled walls to this room to really get the point across!). A place where we can have a conversation by candlelight or curl up with a soft blanket and catch up on our latest read. It’s just the perfect prelude to the “long winter nap” that’s on the horizon.
If you’re shopping for some new fall decor, I’ve saved my favorites here!
