Designing with a neutral color palette doesn’t have to be boring. In fact, the Pulp team loves to use those muted colors to create bold and beautiful interiors. But how do we do that? The secret is to use 4 design ideas to take things from mediocre to amazing! Try these tips for great rooms:
1. Texture
In a room that has a calm palette, it’s important to add plenty of texture to attract visual interest. In the modern Dallas farmhouse designed by Pulp above, we used a variety of different textures. Leather trim, velvet cushions, tweed upholstery and wood surfaces not only look great, but they also add depth and dimension to this living room.
2. Style
Although the colors in a room may be limited, there is so much you can do with patterns to liven things up! In the Dallas dining room above, Pulp used gray and brown for a sophisticated look. But the bold pattern on the rug and wallpaper on the ceiling make things bold and exciting. There is also a pattern on the walls to break things apart. The result is more adventurous, proving that you don’t always need eye-catching colors to shake things up!
3. Materials
When it comes to a modern organic look, it’s definitely a material world! So think naturally when working with neutrals. For this stunning modern treehouse designed in Seattle, we gave the neutral space a cool style using wood, metal, concrete, stone, and fabrics. This combination of materials makes this living room feel like it’s part of the natural world right outside those windows!
4. Tone
Did you know that Sherwin-Williams offers over 120 white paint colors? It’s all about the tones that can range from green to pink to yellow. So when you’re designing with neutral colors, consider changing the tones and shades of one color for a calm and soothing oasis. In this modern treehouse designed by Pulp, we used the color of the driftwood as a starting point and then layered light and dark colors. You’ve created a dreamy bedroom perfect for a good night’s sleep!
