“Winter is a time of rest, of good food and warmth, of the touch of a friendly hand, of conversation by the fire: it is the time of coming home.” Edith Sitwell
Here are five ways to welcome the winter season at home:
1. Embrace calm
Adopt simple ways to slow down and enjoy your home this quieter season. Include your favorite winter senses! The crackling of fires in the fireplace, the flickering of candles, winter scents, soothing music, more meaningful conversations, less social noise, more rest, less hustle. What inspires you to feel peace in your home? Do more of it!
2. Enjoy warmth, comfort + joy
Enjoy all the cozy comforts and joys of winter at home. Even though the Christmas season will be behind us, don’t leave behind the light, greenery and cozy fabrics. These items make your home feel lively and welcoming even in the dreary winter. Savor cozy winter rituals like making soup and sipping afternoon tea. Make time for winter experiences like reading your favorite book and sitting by the fire under a soft blanket. Read my book A Beautiful Life for more inspiration about the simple joys of every season.
3. Update + clean
Get a fresh, clean start to the year in your winter home. Take advantage of this winter to spruce up your home while you’re indoors anyway! Go room by room. What should go? What can you live without? What needs a deep cleaning? How can you reorganize or update what you have? Do you have inspiring home tunes to keep up with your cleaning? I teach my techniques at HomeBody Gathering Place.
4. Nourish and live
Start your winter home healing journey. Invest in what is healthy and good for you and eliminate what is not. Think about all the experiences of home: cleaning, entertaining, clutter, food, movement, social media, community, spending, decor, etc. What changes can you make at home to better nourish yourself in these areas this year? Read my book Homesteading for more inspiration. Find all my books here.
5. Set seasonal goals at home
Set household goals for the season and the entire year. There’s no rush to set goals by January 1st. Use the first weeks of the year to settle into the rhythm of the new year. Think about what you need to work on in your home this winter and next year. Which rooms need your attention? What projects need to be completed this year? What decisions can you make at home that will allow you to enjoy your environment (and your life!) more? Take notes and set attainable goals for your home.
