Blackberry syrup has a lot of flavor. They are delicious and very easy to make. All you need is 3 ingredients and 10 minutes.
I’ve made simple syrup many times before, but this blackberry syrup is the best I’ve ever made.
It all started when I bought a snow cone machine not long ago. Admittedly, it was panic buying before school ended for the summer. I thought it would be fun to hang out from time to time when we’re bored. But as it turns out, at least so far, we’ve used this snow cone machine a lot.
That’s why I’m sharing this blackberry syrup recipe with you. Making syrup for the snow cones is definitely an extra step. But when I researched the ingredients of the pre-made drink for snow cones, I felt like it was worth making my own. Especially if we’re going to be eating snow cones regularly this summer.
This isn’t the only thing you can use homemade blackberry simple syrup for. It’s also great for cocktails, tea, sparkling water, over ice cream, and even pancakes. Plus, you can make a little fresh jam using the leftover fruit too, so nothing goes to waste.
ingredients
1 cup water 1 cup sugar 1 cup blackberries 1 lemon (optional)
You can use any type of fruit you like for this drink, not just blackberries. But the blackberry syrup is so delicious! So I highly recommend it.
If you want to replace the fruit with something else (or even a combination of several different fruits), you’ll only need a total cup of the fruit(s) you want to add.
How to make blackberry syrup
1. Start by adding the water and sugar to a small saucepan or medium saucepan over medium heat.
2. Wash the blackberries well (or whatever type of fruit you are using) then add them to the water and sugar mixture.
3. Leave the blackberry syrup mixture to boil over low heat for 10 minutes, then remove it from the heat.
4. When it’s cooled for a few minutes, taste it to determine if you want to add a squeeze of lemon to brighten the flavor and add a little sweetness. This is really just a thing of preference and may also depend on how fresh/ripe the fruit you are using.
5. Once the mixture has cooled for a few minutes, filter the mixture through a small sieve into a clean, airtight container. I usually use Weck jars, but I love these too.
Serve the mixture with all kinds of drinks, over pies, ice cream and of course snow cones for the most beautiful dessert.
How long will this fruit simple syrup last?
Blackberry syrup or blackberry simple syrup like this will last 1-2 weeks in the refrigerator (in an airtight container). It can be frozen for up to 3 months. If you choose to freeze, be sure to switch to a plastic (not glass) container.
Make jam using leftovers
To make sure nothing is wasted in this recipe, you can use leftover chunky fruit scraps as fresh fruit jam on toast, crackers, and even pb and j sandwiches. it is delicious! I tried it on some cookies I made for my son and YUM.
While the typical cooking time for making jam without pectin is at least 20 minutes (in order to thicken it), the fruit scraps from a blackberry syrup recipe are usually very thick indeed. Refrigerate in an airtight container – This fresh jam should be consumed within 5-10 days.
Making blackberry snow cones
Snow cones are a perfect summer treat for kids. They cool you down on a hot day and contain some delicious sugars too. You can’t love him. It would be great for birthday parties and end of school celebrations too.
Our snow cone machine is very easy to use and I imagine most are very straight forward.
Simply plug it in, throw in any size ice (as long as it’s not huge clumps), turn the switch on, and press the handle down. Shaved ice snow cone in seconds.
Then you scoop it into a cone shape. The device I came with comes with reusable plastic cones and some paper cones as well. Then just add a few spoonfuls of homemade blackberry syrup on top.
You can sprinkle some edible flowers on top if you want to make it look even fancier.
