Located in the Jardins neighborhood of São Paulo, Brazilian firm RUA 141 Arquitetura transformed JB’s apartment, honoring its initial renovation in 2012 and introducing new elements to create a cohesive, modern aesthetic. Led by architect Mona Singal, the renovation project sought to preserve the original architectural language while introducing vibrant new elements. The apartment’s social areas retained their signature burnt cement floors, with additional lighting carefully placed to highlight the ribbed concrete panels. A bright yellow sliding door and a painting by artist Gabriela Costa add a playful pop of color to the entryway, adding a dynamic contrast to the neutral backdrop.
To soften the brutalist feel of the space, a selection of Brazilian-style furniture and décor has been chosen. Pieces such as the Jader Almeida bank table, crafted from polished Nero Marquina marble, and the Jabuticaba lamp by Anna Newt add a sophisticated touch to the interior design. A custom-made bookshelf, crafted from marine plywood, extends into the living and dining areas, maintaining a sense of continuity throughout the home. In addition to the yellow door at the entrance, a red door opens to reveal a passageway to the apartment’s private areas, while blue doors in the dining room open onto a set of built-in wardrobes, all of which complement the primary colour triad.
Several new design elements have been introduced to enhance the apartment’s functionality and aesthetics. For example, a glass door has been installed to seamlessly connect the terrace to the social area, providing a smooth transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. Metal benches with slim profiles and integrated planters filled with tropical plants contrast with the raw concrete surfaces, adding a natural vibe to the space.
Throughout the apartment, Brazilian design plays a pivotal role, giving the space character, comfort, and a sense of lightness. Mona Singal’s vision for the project reflects a deep appreciation for local craftsmanship and design, resulting in a stylish and inviting home, rooted in its cultural context.
The renovation also paid special attention to private areas. The existing hardwood floors in the bedrooms were replaced with new Tauri wood in a herringbone pattern, providing a contemporary reinterpretation of classic design. In the master suite, materials such as caramel leather and wooden bedside tables provide warmth, while unique lighting fixtures and curated artwork add a personal and magical touch.
The apartment’s bathrooms feature a range of artisanal materials. In the powder room, all surfaces are covered in ceramic tile that provides a warm, textured feel, while in the master bathroom, granite surfaces are paired with black fixtures and natural wood detailing to create a sophisticated, upscale look. Meanwhile, the kids’ bathroom features mint green and white hydraulic tiles that add a playful, modern touch.
