Bedrooms provide a relaxing retreat at the end of a long day, and are more than just a place to lie down and sleep. These “home recharging stations” provide a place to unwind and recharge mentally and physically. Therefore, a well-thought-out bedroom design will not only allow you to get a good night’s sleep but will also increase your overall well-being.
To help you out, here’s Ashley Furniture’s smart guide to planning the perfect bedroom design to make this room welcoming, cheerful, and functional.
First, ask yourself, “How will I use my bedroom?”
Start by determining your bedroom needs – do you need a cozy place to read? A place to meditate or enjoy your morning coffee? The different functions of your bedroom will play a crucial role in the layout of the room.
Next, consider the job.
Whether your room is large or small, function is key when choosing furniture for your bedroom. Depending on your needs, look for clever designs like a loveseat or sofa that provide seating and extra storage. Nesting side tables are a great option for bedside tables because they provide more surface space when needed. If you’re bringing a TV into your room, choose a piece that can be closed to hide the TV when it’s not in use. Also, make sure there’s adequate task and ambient lighting.
Then measure everything.
Next, measure the space and get the measurements of the furniture pieces you want to add to the room. Draw a plan and add the various elements, making sure not to block any windows or doors.
and choose a focal point
When designing your bedroom layout, it is important to identify a focal point. Remember, this is the main focal point around which the rest of the furniture will be arranged – it could be a beautiful bed, a large window or, if you are lucky, a beautiful fireplace.
“Based on your measurements and focal point, jot down your ideas on paper,” says Ashley Furniture. “Consider traffic flow and make sure your design allows people to move easily in and out of the room without encountering obstacles or tight spaces. In the layout, highlight the most direct path from entry to exit and position furniture so that there are no obstructions in that path. Consider alternate plans to have a variety of options. If there is an entrance along a wall, group furniture against that wall. If there are two doors opposite each other, the room can be divided into two separate areas. If there are multiple doors, the room can be divided into separate areas, each with its own function.”
“Once you have your living room layout decided, it’s time to decide what furniture you’ll be using. You can choose to rearrange what you have, incorporate new items, or start from scratch with entirely new furniture.”
