There’s nothing worse than feeling cold in your home, and while we don’t want our energy bills to skyrocket in these cold months, there are plenty of ways to make your space warmer and cozier, from installing curtains to having a soft rug under your feet when you take off your shoes.
With energy costs constantly on the rise, investing in ways to keep the cold out and the warmth in is a smart move that will pay off over time. One of the easiest ways to do this is with the right window coverings and the added bonus is that you can give your home a fresh and stylish look at the same time.
Melbourne-based stylist and Carpet Court ambassador Heather Nett-King says covering your windows on a cold night can be like hugging your room warmly! “The best forms of insulation are thick curtains, blinds and plantation shutters – and even better is a combination of all three.” Yep, gone are the days when you needed every window in your home to look exactly the same.
So, what are the best insulation options? Not only do insulating curtains keep your room dark, they’re also great at keeping the cold out. Combine that with an extra layer of insulating curtains in your bedroom and you’ve got a very dark and warm room!
If the clean, classic look of plantation blinds is your thing, Heather says they’re also an effective way to keep heat in because they’re specifically designed to fit snugly into window frames. “The thick PVC material is heat and moisture resistant.”
Having your curtains measured and installed by a professional will go a long way in preventing drafts. “I like my curtains to hang from the top of the window frame, and to gently gather on the floor,” says Heather. “That much fabric will make your ceiling look taller (trust me) and it will also make it harder for heat to escape.” They also give a designer look, so curtains are back in style!
When it comes to getting out of your warm bed on a cold morning, there’s nothing quite like the feeling of a soft rug under your bare feet, right? Carpet Court offers a stunning range of rugs that will not only add warmth to your home, but also that all-important texture, whether you prefer something neutral or want to make a statement with colours and patterns. And remember our favourite rug rule: when in doubt, go bigger!
Some of our favorite picks from Carpet Court are the Darren Palmer collection and the cute nursery rugs that will add color and fun to bedrooms and nurseries. Let’s face it, our little ones spend a lot of time on the floor, so make it soft and cozy for them!
