It’s been a while but I’ve finally finished Odelia’s big girl room. Just in time to turn it back into a nursery :-p But it needed a moment to shine and I’m so excited to finally share this big girl’s room with floral wallpaper with you!
Last fall, she began the process of renovating her large room after we got her out of her crib. And then I found out I was pregnant and would probably have to turn her room back into a nursery. So I was never “finished” with it. Until I got an email saying Better Homes & Gardens wanted to come to our house to take photos and her room was one of the rooms on the shoot list.
I never planned on tying up all the loose ends here, but the photo shoot gave me the opportunity to do so and take all the beautiful photos. So let’s dive in!
floral wallpaper
The biggest change I made here is adding this gorgeous floral wallpaper. It’s a Henny Ginseng pattern from Sandberg Wallpaper and feels soft, feminine and vintage. It instantly transformed the look of this room and seemed like the perfect print for Odelia.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t look right for our little one, so I’m unfortunately going to hang a different wallpaper over it. More on that soon 😉
This was the first time I had used traditional wallpaper in a while instead of peel and stick, and it definitely had its advantages and wasn’t as daunting as it sounds. All you have to do is apply the paste directly to the wall and then place your paper. There is a lot of leeway to move the paper to get it into the perfect position. And it’s definitely worth it.
The rug is a new addition too – it’s from my friend Liz at Six Vintage Rugs and I couldn’t love it more. She has the most beautiful pieces of her kind and I love how the pink ties in the wallpaper.
the bed
All three of our kids have antique beds and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I looked up this product on Facebook Marketplace in my hometown and asked my parents to bring it with them for a visit. It has a nice shape and adds a lot of character to this space.
I layered the floral sheets with a neutral, fluffy comforter, a kantha comforter, and a gorgeous throw blanket I found at an estate sale. I rarely have to make her bed because she sleeps on top of it all with her bright pink Minnie Mouse blanket, ha!
Odelia will be moving into Eloise’s room which has bunk beds, but we will definitely keep that bed for when the baby is older.
Murphy bed
The Murphy bed is still part of this room, and probably always will be. This was our guest room, but after we got Odelia, we made it a combined guest room/nursery. Since Baba lives downstairs, we don’t have any room anywhere else for guests. So when my parents or someone else comes to stay, Odelia has a slumber party with someone and this becomes a guest room again.
We tackled the Murphy Bed project when I was about 7 months pregnant with her and it was a beast but it was the best and most functional piece of furniture for this space. Plus, it’s very pretty too.
The ceiling was something we kept intact as well. We added faux ceiling beams that we made and painted evening sable from valspar. It finished well with the floral wallpaper so I didn’t repaint it!
the details
I haven’t made a lot of big changes here besides some old decor here and there. The dresser is the same one we used as a changing table, and I found this adorable lampshade at Goodwill. I gave the base a little DIY makeover and I love how the scallop ties into the femininity of the room.
The counter was antique shop and I love the floral accent on it. I purchased the above sconce online and wrapped the shade in some fabric to make it look more unique.
I also took out the neutral linen curtains I had here and hung these beautiful brown fabric curtains. The ability to mix styles is something I really like in other designers and is something I’ve tried to work on in this field. It’s definitely a learning process, but the more you practice, the easier it gets. And I love how the gingham curtains and floral wallpaper look together!
It will be sad to say goodbye to this room but I’m excited for another nursery. Stay tuned for those plans!
