With $10,000 in cash from Ford, an additional $10,000 to upgrade Hafele’s wardrobe, and an additional $10,000 for a Gucci dress and earrings, it was no surprise that the Blockheads went all out in their next bedroom challenge. From playful kids’ rooms to a “sexy” guest room, a new “vacation resort” theme, and more, the judges were impressed.
But with such a high standard and the extra point penguin in play, who did enough to win?
Christian and Mimi (1st place, 28/30)
Marty said Christian and Mimi’s nursery was so playful, sophisticated and camera-friendly, with soft clouds as the headboard – complete with LED lighting in the back and a graphic rainbow on top.
“Idea of the day!” said Darren, adding that the Create Estate moon bed headboard “is going to break the internet”. “This is going to be a bestseller on The Block Shop because it’s just so stunning,” he said. For Shayna, this was just the beginning, saying she loved the soft palette and play on Art Deco and 50s style that felt somehow coastal. The judges agreed that even the pull-out beds that struggled for space and the artwork hanging too high for the kids couldn’t detract from the fun.

Kylie and Brad (2nd place, 27.5/30)
Were Kylie and Brad listening to the judges’ advice? It seemed so when Chyna led the four-person cheerleading squad this week, pointing out the “just right” mix of black and white, the perfect Kinsman wardrobes (complete with soft leather handles), the gorgeous Briar Ivory jute and wool rug, and the practical floorboards.
“They just needed a little change in thinking,” Darren said, “and here it is! The black is still there but it’s soft, light and bright.” Even Marty agreed, loving the Myer Triple Bunk bed, Grafico wallpaper and Bohteak Hapuna Hanging Chair that “really says Phillip Island.” Add to that the perfect artwork and the sleek Porta Timber feature and it was a room that everyone loved. If they had played Penguin, they would have won!

Courtney & Grant (3rd, 27/30)
For Marty, the immediate attraction to House 2 was the curves. “It’s unbelievable!” he said as he walked into the room, with Darren adding, “My heart jumped out of my chest!” For Shayna, it was the built-ins like the Kinsman cabinets, Bailey dining chair and Solstice Cairo bedding that caught her eye… but unlike her colleagues, she wasn’t entirely convinced. She said the pendants were too big and looked odd, and the office area had a power outlet underneath it that couldn’t be reached from above.
“Details, details,” Marty replied, glancing at the curved sideboards and elaborate finishes. He declared that this room showed why he thought Courtney and Grant were the front runners for the lot. “This house is every auctioneer’s dream!”

Ricky & Hayden (joint 4th place, 26.5/30)
After the disaster of the previous week, Ricky and Hayden needed a confidence boost this week and they certainly got it from the judges who loved everything from the Arlo bed and matching bedside, the chic off-centre feature wall, the contemporary P50 shade line around the door and skirting, the chic Amanda Hinkleman artwork with the boucle, linen, rug and sheer curtains all working in harmony and the high quality finish that won praise.
“I love it. I love it. I love it so much!” said Darren. “I destroyed it!” added Scotty. Only the wardrobe was the reason they stopped—but with new energy, a new builder, and a new style (“a holiday resort,” Scotty decided), the boys were back!

Jesse & Paige (joint 4th place, 26.5/30)
A versatile room—designed for kids but easily converted to an adult room, with a king-size bed, Marty said—Jessie and Paige’s room impressed the judges at first glance. With a Kave Home Boucle chair, Velux double skylights, rattan pendant and Iconiko artwork, it was “on trend,” Darren said, “and fit in well with the rest of the house!”
But upon closer inspection, the judges quickly found flaws. From the unfinished paint and rough plaster in the wardrobe, to the pink desk with ornate edges that was too low to sit on and the unfinished grout, they felt time had simply run out. A few days of make-up would have fixed things, but as presented, this room was far from a profitable space.
