I love homemade chili. Have you ever tried making chili seasoning at home? If not, you won’t believe how easy it is! Using ingredients you likely already have in your kitchen, you can mix up your own homemade chili seasoning and never buy a jar from the store again.

Hot pepper marinade ingredients
Chili Powder, Cumin, and Cayenne Pepper – (Optional: This is an ingredient you can use to increase or decrease the heat of your spice blend.) Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, and Salt – This is also optional – I used kosher salt. You can also use sea salt or table salt. Pepper – Freshly ground black pepper.
When choosing a container for my homemade spice blend, I chose these 4 ounce jars with bamboo lids. If you use the same containers, you can triple this recipe to get an almost full jar as you can see in my photos.

Why Homemade Spices Are Best
Best Ingredients – Homemade spices are great because you can be sure what’s in them (and what’s not). If you’re avoiding sugar, dairy, or gluten, making your own spices can give you peace of mind. You can also choose to use all organic spices if you’d like. Unlimited Supply – If you make chili as often as we do, it’s annoying to rely on store-bought spice packets. This way, I always have what I need and if I run out, I can always make more. Amazing Taste – I swear by the flavors in this recipe. It tastes so good and my whole family loves it. You can adjust the spice level – If I make this chili seasoning recipe as written, I consider it “mild.” It’s full of flavor and has some heat, but it’s not too hot for my kids. If you want to bulk it up a bit, add more chili (try doubling it at first) and you can add ground chili flakes.
Expiry date
A batch of homemade spices can last in your pantry for one to two years. For maximum freshness, use them within six months. This probably goes without saying, but using fresh spices will extend their shelf life. So if this is a concern for you, don’t use spices that have been sitting in your drawer for years.
How much spice is in the package?
If you are using a recipe that calls for “one packet” of store-bought chili seasoning mix, that packet is equivalent to one store-bought packet.
Tips for making
Make a large batch – This recipe makes one “packet” of spices, or the correct amount for one pot of chili. When I make this recipe, I always at least triple it so I have more left over for future batches. Secret Ingredients (Optional) – If you want to add something unique to your chili seasoning, try a little cocoa powder, cinnamon, or leftover coffee grounds. Many recipes use these as a “secret” ingredient to add depth to the flavor. Add Spices – To make chili, double the amount of chili in this recipe and add red pepper flakes. You can add spices as desired while cooking in the slow cooker (it’s easier to keep adding more than realizing you’ve overdone it).
