Have you ever wondered what are the best questions to ask to get to know someone?
You know.
When you’re at a party and you don’t know anyone, you’re on your fourth drink and you’re desperately looking for a conversation. But you don’t know how to start a conversation? You swallow, sigh and wish you had a question to ask?
I also wanted to ask some questions, so I read an article from a website called Conversation Starter about the top 200 questions to ask to get to know someone.
Aren’t you curious to know what they are?
Oh good.
Me too.
Here are five of the 200 (in no particular order).
1. What is the reason for your fame?
2. Where would you rather be from?
3. What is the best book or series you have ever read?
4. What topic can you give a 40-minute lecture on without any preparation?
And my personal favorite:
5. What is one thing you wish would never change?
Do you think these questions will help?
How did they decide that these things would get people talking?
Did they do the phone survey?
Did they conduct an online survey?
Did they ask a thousand inquiring minds?
Let’s test the theory. I’ll answer the five questions in this post, and you answer one in the comments.
And then?
Let’s see if we can get to know each other better.
Okay.
Here it goes.
1. What is the reason for your fame?
I know I’m writing this blog and some books and trying to decorate my house in the fall with pumpkins and artichokes.
But that’s not really why I’m famous.
Not even close.
Who’s here? My claim to fame is that I’m Whitney and Westley’s mom.
Sometimes I’ll be stopped by someone I don’t know in the produce aisle at Walmart, and I’ll get excited because I think they’re a reader who’s read one of my books or blogs or follows me on social media.
no.
sigh.
It’s just someone who knows the twins and asks me if I’m their mother.
Have you ever cooked spaghetti squash?

2. Where would you rather be from?
I wish I was from England.
Cornwall specifically.
I wish I could live where Poldark lived and know how to ride horses, climb cliffs, swim in the ocean, row boats and speak the most amazing accent.
I wish my hair would fly in the English wind.

3. What is the best book or series you have ever read?
This is hard.
I had to divide it into fiction and non-fiction.
(Side note: If you’re at the party and start with this potentially long answer – are you telling me you have to go get a carrot stick?)
Novel (I had to put it here because it reminds me so much of my father): Texas by James Michener
I love this book because my dad loved it and it made the story come alive for me.
Non-Fiction Books: The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman
This book has changed my life dramatically, helping me understand my mother, my husband, my children, and ordinary people throughout my life.

4. What topic can you give a 40-minute lecture on without any preparation?
Umm.
I have a few of them. 🙂
Blogging.
And more blogging.
How to photograph dining rooms.
And how to shop on the side of the road and find sticks and turn them into this.
How to apply lipstick without a mirror.

And last but not least:
5. What is one thing you wish would never change?
I hope I never lose my sense of wonder at all the little things.
truly.
My grandmother lived to be 94, and I still remember driving with her as she expressed her joy at the simplest things that most people might overlook. She would talk about the clouds in the sky, the leaves changing color, the flowers just beginning to bloom.
That’s why I try to take care of the little things, too.
Like the first day of crisp, cool fall weather.
Or the texture of pumpkins against the antique wood of a salvaged table.
Or the ornate walls painted in a bright sea blue.
Or the wonderful patterns and colors in the rug.
And the little dots on the button.
The beauty of the bird of paradise in flower arrangement.
The world turns and changes and revolves from one wonderful and glorious season to the next.
There are so many wonders in every moment.
If you simply look.

I know I only said five questions to get to know you.
But you may have another one.
Did you get a new rug for the dining room?
Yes.
Yes I did.
This is one of the new rugs from my dear friend Sarah’s new rug line from Simply Southern Cottage. Isn’t it beautiful? I wish I could see it in real life. Seriously. It’s stunning. It has such a deep depth of color and pattern with shades of blue, yellow, green, and cream and it’s so thick and soft.
You can see their entire product line here.
You can see the rug I have here.
To celebrate the product launch, there’s a coupon available now for an additional $23.37 off the price.

I love a good conversation and I love questions too. I mean, I wonder why the Earth is round, why kangaroos have pockets, where all the extra socks go, and will there ever be a sequel to Downtown Abbey?
Now, I’d like to hear more about you.
I am waiting.
Wait a second.
Let me have another cup of coffee first.
Okay, let’s go. 🙂
