Our bedroom hasn’t looked right since we moved in.
Because I needed to photograph it for the book, I got it in good enough condition, but it didn’t look like me and I was too busy to take the time to figure out why.
I liked every single piece, what’s the problem?
This picture is from the book and it’s good, but it doesn’t look like me.
So, this summer, I decided it was time to figure it out. I went back to step one of the five steps to decorating a room and calmed it down.
I moved the sofa to the side of the room, then moved it into the living room to see the room with fresh eyes. The sofa is the most prominent piece, and I’ve learned historically that I’m not happy with large patterns in my home. But I still love the sofa, and I bought it on a bargain from the previous owners. It’s very well made, and has a beautiful, timeless look—but I’m starting to think it was the cause of all my problems.
Well, Chad and I hated how the bed felt without the couch. The back of the couch was used to being a cozy little wall at the end of the bed, and it felt strange without it in this huge room. I also noticed that without the brown couch, the black and white bed, lamps, dresser, and pillow looked stark and uninviting. I wanted more warmth, not less.
I moved the couch into place and decided that the problem wasn’t that I didn’t like the style, it was that I wasn’t finished decorating yet.
I created some prototypes in Keynote and realized that a pair of shorter brown lamps looked much better in the room, and the couch was really good – I needed more brown, more pattern.
The problem was that I couldn’t complete my original vision. I got stuck and couldn’t do all five steps in the right order.
I still want to get a rug with some brown in it, and I keep my eyes peeled for the right art above the cabinets, but I’m in no rush. I feel confident now that I’m moving in the right direction and that makes a huge difference!
