I used to share a monthly favorite post and stopped as we moved because it got a little overwhelming! Collecting my favorites for the month seemed even more difficult with all the turmoil and chaos that came with the move and renovations. I’m finding my stride again and realizing I miss sharing my favorites. I thought about starting to share it again in the same format, but decided to change it up and start something new. Instead of sharing them monthly, I’ll be sharing four things weekly – what I’m reading, what I’m watching, what I’m loving, and what I’m working on. In this format, I can share things when they’re new and in bite-sized chunks for my readers. So, here we go with the first four things…
What I’m reading
As I recently shared (in this post), I usually read several books at once, so in these posts, I’ll highlight one of the books I’m reading from my audiobook and audiobook list.
I’ve been reading The Sea Journal which is a fascinating record of the journals and sketchbooks kept by sailors, explorers, travellers, ship captains and sailors. I love peeking into other people’s sketchbooks and journals, so this is the book for me. Not only did I enjoy learning about the people and places, but I found all kinds of inspiration in their words and art. It’s the kind of book I enjoy for its visual beauty as well as what I learn from the text.
What I watch
Leaders! If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you may remember that I’ve been a fan of the Washington Redskins (now Leaders) since I was in middle school. It was a commitment full of disappointments, admittedly, but I remained a loyal fan. Now, with new owners, new coaches, new players, and an exciting new rookie quarterback (Jayden Daniels), there seems to be some magic in the air and I’m here for it.
What I like
In Sea Magazine, I read about Ilse Postelmann, an artist and explorer. I went diving six fathoms under the surface of the water wearing a heavy brass helmet to take photos of deep ocean wildlife. “She was fascinated. She drew the life forms around her, using a steel pen on a zinc engraving plate. Trying to capture everything underwater was difficult and she had to be careful not to turn her head in case her helmet fell off with her oxygen supply, but she came back again and again.” and repeatedly to the bottom of the sea. In subsequent dives, an iron bandstand was lowered to the bottom of the sea, upon which were tied a canvas and a lead-laden canvas painted with oil paint, the brushes of which floated and the wooden handles upright, dragging lightly on the strings.

I mean talking about drawing from life. I find her courageous commitment to curiosity and record-keeping deeply moving.

What I’m working on
We’re having our first dry, sunshine day in over a week, so I’m going to get to work decorating the dining room. Plus, I just got the best news…the glue and foam stuck to our basement floor does not contain asbestos, so I’ll be scraping and scrubbing here and there to clean that floor. We’ve done so many exciting projects in this house but I’m almost giddy about this one! Plus, the worry inside me is glad that downstairs isn’t trying to kill me.
I have chores scheduled for me, but I only have to do it once and it would be nice to have a clean floor in the basement…
