Can I make the bow with a wider width board to get a thicker frame?
Yes, a 1×6 board will look great! You can directly replace 1×6 with 1×4 in the cut list and shopping list.
How about making the bow narrower?
You can, but I wouldn’t go any smaller than 1 x 3, as there wouldn’t be much to hold the two boards together. But prove me wrong, I’d love to see a 1×2 or 2×2 version.
Will the arc end?
We recommend using fishing line and tent stakes to prevent the bow from tipping over. If in an indoor location, the arch can be attached to the walls for additional support. This is especially important with heavy floral arrangements or potential wind.
Can I disassemble the bow and use it again?
Yes, but with the woodworking method, expect to be able to assemble and disassemble about 10 times before the screws strip the wood. If you’re looking to build a rental piece, building a second hexagon and lapped joints, with screws at the joints, would be a better long-term solution.
What about the double hexagonal arch?
Yes, you can do it! Simply build two brackets, then connect them with 1x panels if desired.
What type of finishing do you recommend?
It depends on the look you are going for. Most people want a rustic wood finish – to get that look, use a wood stain (a small can is all you’ll need) then apply with a foam applicator brush and wipe on. Old wood conditioner will give you a gray look. White paint will give you a bright white appearance.
I don’t have a pocket punch tool – how do I join the panels together?
The easiest way is to buy repair boards or tie-down boards like these from Amazon
Make sure the screws are 3/4 inch long, so they don’t penetrate the wood, and make sure there are at least four holes in the repair boards (8 holes is ideal). Repair panels should be no larger than 2″ x 5″ for a 1×4 panel.
Do I need a miter saw?
A miter saw will be the easiest, quickest, and safest way to make these cuts. You can use a speed square and a circular saw (or even a jigsaw) to make the cut, but it will definitely be more difficult.
