After four weeks of leaning against the fireplace in the living room, the Ethan Allen Quincy bed we found on Facebook Marketplace finally made it up the stairs into our room this weekend (thanks to some helpers we hired to get it for us).
I couldn’t love him more! When I got cute new shoes as a kid, I kept them near my bed so I could see them while I went to sleep. Did you do that too? Now I sleep in a nice new bed and wake up happy in my daisy sheets!
Although we now have to make some unexpected updates like new bedside tables and lamps, repaint the walls and probably some other renovations to make it all work, you can imagine how happy I am with this complete turn of events :).
Some people search for months or years for specific pieces they want, but I found the bed of my dreams almost immediately after my first search. I wasn’t even planning on buying a bed right now, but it was meant to be. coincidence. I need to start looking more often!
You can read my first post about finding a bed here.
Minutes before I thought about looking for the bed on FBMP, I was showing my husband this exact bed on Ethan Allen. Crazy, yeah? I was creating a dream mood board for our home and wanted to include this bed as part of my overall style “vision.” So I showed it to him just to ask if he liked it (he did) and what color he thought I should choose (we agreed that robin’s egg blue looked right).
And suddenly at that very moment I said to myself, you should look him up at the FBMP. I knew it was a long shot, but what if? Aspire for a lot! So I wrote Ethan Allen’s Quincy Bed and BAM! he was there! Robin’s blue Quincy bed. I’ve been wanting this bed for years, so I couldn’t believe my eyes!
However, even though we received the message that we could come pick it up, I knew it wouldn’t be easy. This bed was in Canada (we are across the border in the US) and we do not have a truck.
And that was just the beginning of the challenges!
Many of you have asked to read the rest of the story and the incidents we encountered, so I will share more that I didn’t share in the original post.
So here’s the rest of the story – for you, my curious friends. 🙂
For some reason, we always forget to turn on the “roaming” feature on our phone when we go to Canada.
So I will say that our first challenge could have been avoided if we had simply remembered to do it :).
Our car is old enough to not have any built-in navigation features, but we were in a Uhaul rental and it didn’t have one either.
Once we crossed into Canada, the map feature on our phone stopped working so we were immediately…. Lost. Somehow, after wandering around an outdoor mall, we managed to find a banking machine that was supposed to be open for 24 hours – but it was closed.
This means we cannot get the Canadian money we need to buy the bed.
Not to be discouraged, we headed towards the seller’s house (luckily I had memorized the step-by-step directions, so it was almost like the old days without a phone or computerized navigation haha), but we had to go without the money to buy the bed.
The saleswoman didn’t speak much English so we were communicating with her adult daughter on the phone. I explained to them on our way to their house that the bank machines were closed. We started trying to find a different way to get her money, which ended up being more difficult than we expected.
She originally said she didn’t want to use PayPal which would have been the simplest way to do it from the start, but she eventually agreed to set up her account so we could pay for it that way.
But after looking at the bed we discovered a new problem. We couldn’t separate the bed with the tools we brought! I’m starting to get really worried that we’ll have to go home without her. At least my husband said I hadn’t paid for it yet, but I didn’t want to come that far just to come home without it!
So we then had to leave the bed and their house to go to Home Depot to find suitable new tools. I’m surprised she trusted us to come back. Thank God she didn’t sell it to someone else while we were gone!
We found the right tools and finally disassembled the bed. Now it’s time to get the bed downstairs. The headboard was so heavy that the owner offered to help us. She was probably worried we’d drop it on her stairs or hit a wall, which honestly worried us a little too.
She was a little lady but she stood on one side and I was on the other side and my husband was on the far end! Obviously we’re not as young or talented as we used to be, but we somehow managed to get down the stairs and into the rental truck.
The daughter’s PayPal account finally became available so I could transfer the money and we could go home with the bed in the truck. Phew! perseverance.
At this point we had been in Canada for four hours longer than we had planned. After a quick stop at Chipotle, we headed to the border and thankfully, we crossed without incident. They asked why we were in the country, what we bought and why, and looked in the back of the truck to make sure we weren’t smuggling anything illegal in.
I can’t imagine I’ll ever again go to that much effort to find a Facebook Marketplace, but all in all, our Quincy Bed was worth it. Of course, if I find another great deal on something I loved so much, you know I’ll do it again! But the real question is, after reading this story, will anyone in Canada sell to me again? Who do you know?
My Quincy bed is so charming, and I’m so excited to have a piece that I love so much!
And if you’re looking for gorgeous, soft organic cotton sheets, these sheets from Garnet Hill are great! I’m obsessed with their quilts too. Sources below!
