Hello friends! What makes a home feel truly luxurious?
This beautiful spring weather has made me re-evaluate the use and function of our home. I really enjoy projects like this! Not only will you get a great result, but you can usually get rid of excess items and use/enjoy your home more! The concept behind functional wellbeing is simple. When something works, it’s fun to use/try.
The first time the word “luxury” came to mind when thinking about our home was after we finished remodeling our kitchen. In general, I’m not drawn to fancy or large objects/rooms/styles. I love simplicity. my house.
But one day, as I used our kitchen, I thought about how luxurious it was… Our careful planning to keep only what we used, and only in cabinets where the job was done, paid off. Simple yet amazing! Excellent luxury job! Since that moment of epiphany, I’ve been applying this concept throughout the house…
My focus today is this weird corner of the living room that backs into the kitchen. Before we redid the dining room, our buffet was placed here, but after moving the buffet into the dining room, I filled the empty corner with a wingback chair. This was a good placeholder but not terribly functional…no one wanted to sit too far from the rest of the seating in the living room and the chair stuck out enough to catch your toe in the middle of the night.
The solution I came up with was to move into this bookcase I’ve had since childhood. It fits the space perfectly and I can see myself sitting here writing thank you notes!
While moving my books, I purged a good-sized collection of books that were no longer worthy of attention. These books went to Half Price Books to resell and I got $20! This was an unexpected bonus!
With the extra space, I was able to include a few pieces of blue and white decor to attract attention. These pieces catch my attention every day!
As I reorganized the books, I grouped them by topic with the ones I cared about the most on the easiest level. That will be the third shelf. The third shelf holds my favorite English interior design books and a pocket of country kitchen design books. Since moving it here I’ve checked it out for reference a few times!
This project had a ripple effect, and with extra books from another room we’re getting ready to redesign, I reorganized and decorated the other two bookshelves in the living room. When placing books on shelves, I consider who uses the books and where they prefer to sit in the evening. This bookcase is next to Matt’s sofa and he reads a lot. Therefore, this bottom shelf holds the books he is currently interested in. A simple, yet very luxurious idea so that the books you enjoy are close at hand when you have time to read!
With three bookcases filled with books, the living room has taken on even more of a cozy and cozy English countryside feel! I hope you’ve gotten some inspiration to rethink the space in your home to give it as much functionality as possible. You’ll be surprised at how luxurious it feels!
Until next time, take care,
Rachel
