I’m sure you hear voices and see “things” in your home just as I do in mine… before you think I’ve lost my mind, let me explain…
As you walk around your home, you may hear “voices” in your home calling for repair, replacement, or (especially) remodeling! If you live in an older home, as we do, these voices may be screaming for attention. Even if you live in a fairly new home, I’m sure there are still things that need or want to be done. Sometimes, these voices can drown out the other aspects of our homes that we love and appreciate.
In 2018, this was what our living room looked like. Compared to now, things have changed a lot. All the furniture you see was either given to us as a gift, or we got it for free, and we were so grateful to have it! All I remember from those days is how much we enjoyed the cozy warmth of the fireplace in the winter and the beautiful light streaming in from the big window all year round.
Have you heard the term “house curtain”? I’ve heard it recently and it perfectly captures the way we’ve all grown accustomed to the way things look in our homes. In my case, it was the sad (and kind of ugly) brown couch and the old teal love seat with faded pink seashell prints. It could also be the back door that’s badly broken and desperately needs a coat of paint, or the broken curtain in the hall bathroom… you can imagine.
But I also think there’s another version of not being able to choose the right home. We can all easily focus on what’s “wrong” with our home or what we’d like to change and forget why we fell in love with our homes and chose them in the first place. Do you remember the first time you walked through your potential home?
Matt and I remember that first tour… We walked around the empty house imagining where our furniture would go and talked about how much we loved the fireplace and the beautiful window that looked out into the backyard and the special features like the round stained glass window in the hall bath. This would be our first home and it felt like a pipe dream because we were coming from a 660 square foot condo. This house felt huge and quite grand! We rented from the owners for four years and then were able to buy the house.
This was the day we bought our first home! How exciting was that! As we signed the mountain of paperwork, we held our breath ~ it seemed too good to be true. By October of this year, we will have owned our home for six years and how much it has changed! It’s a good reminder for me to focus on the things we loved most in the beginning and the things we have grown to love over time.
This is what our living room looked like at the beginning of this year. Since this photo was taken, we have acquired a beautiful English tufted sofa and a new bamboo table and lamp. I have come to love the slow progress of creating a home and look forward to the wonderful changes that lie ahead! What did you love about your home when you first moved in? What have you grown to love over time? I would love to hear bits of your journey.
See you next time,
takes care,
Rachel
