Named after its distinctive architectural element, Dome is a new restaurant within Bali’s famous Desa Potato Head Resort. Joining its rich offering of hospitality and cultural amenities, which includes a beach club, 225-room hotel and spa, this OMA-designed venue reflects the sprawling destination’s earthy aesthetic and embodies its environmentally conscious mandate while offering a tinge of urban refinement. .
“We wanted the space to be inviting, a place to connect with like-minded individuals, and to be inspired by all the reference materials around you,” says Isaac Larose, creative director of Desa Potato Head. “The architecture is very futuristic, so we wanted to incorporate it with natural elements. If you look closely, you can see the imperfections in the shades of the reclaimed furniture. We decided to celebrate those imperfections rather than hide them, just like we do with our wines and products.”
Recycled timber and antique rugs define various dining areas and public areas, such as the well-appointed library and lounge, with ample seating including custom-designed sofas from OMA. But it’s the aquamarine blue epoxy floor and the uprights that add the aforementioned sophisticated touch. This contrasting color reflects the surroundings outside especially when illuminated by large, organically shaped skylights.
Evoking the latent but not overt futuristic theme that carries throughout is a series of cistern-like spaces, the kind one might imagine finding on the set of a Mad Max film. The cylindrical shapes are not only present in the Buckminster Fuller Dome-inspired enclosure – which houses a more intimate dining area – but also in the open plan, entirely in the circular and slightly sunken bar.
Cutting-edge technology is incorporated into this seamless staging. The vintage JBL speaker stacks and vinyl DJ sets blend perfectly and highlight the contrasting yet cohesive design scheme overall. Through the eclectic range of finishes, elegant elements with live edges, diamond accents and Newtonian geometry come together harmoniously; Transforming what could be a very strict environment into an attractive and appetizing environment.
Everything is tied together by award-winning chef Diego Ricarte’s menu, which is also a mix of upscale and rugged. South American and European dishes are prepared strictly using locally sourced organic produce and other pantry staples. The dynamic menu highlights ingredients from organic farmers and local producers, while the wine bar focuses on consciously produced natural and biodynamic wines.
