1// The beginning is simple
If you have a clean table (enough), let it do some of the heavy lifting. Forget the tablecloth or placemats. Start by placing a simple runner. We love Cotton cloth or Butcher paper!
2// Take out the good stuff (or don’t)
My mother has a cabinet of crystal glasses and fine china sets that have been passed down from countless relatives. As I tell her, bring out the good stuff! Let them hold warm, admiring hands. And if one breaks, don’t worry, you’ve got a whole closet full (and more relatives).
And if you don’t have a storage cabinet like we’re talking about, your everyday dishes work just fine.
3//Shop in your yard (or your neighbors)
To spruce up your tablecloth, you don’t even have to drive to the store. Everything can be at your fingertips.
We have a juniper tree right outside our bedroom window; This is the time of year I notice them the most! Its branches are thorny, but with some care, it makes a lovely central scene, with berries and all.
Send the kids out on a pinecone hunt. Or call a friend, Take a walk in the woods… You are sure to find a tree from which to borrow branches. Fruit that may already be on your counter adds color to the table. Think pomegranates, pears, and tangerines.
When All Else Fails: Trader Joe’s. And their endless supply of camphor leaves. Mix different types! It looks elegant. Smells great. It lasts days.
4//Add candles
Candles, candles and more candles! Layer tall and short candle holders. The more the merrier. Everything and everyone looks better in the soft glow of candlelight 😉
5// Cloth napkins
Simply add some personality!
