How to make the cutest (the cutest!) yarn-wrapped Christmas tree ornaments.
This is one of the easiest holiday DIYs yet! These Styrofoam string trees can be changed with any material you wish to use.
I wanted new holiday decor in our basement but didn’t want to spend a lot of money – I came up with this idea and it turned out better than I could have imagined.
Initially I was going to use basic threads on the Styrofoam cones, but I wanted a fluffier look.
Insert that knit thread I’ve been saving forever – for the blanket I haven’t made yet, ha!:
They are very soft and fluffy, and I had an idea–I wondered how they could be wrapped around cones instead of regular string. Well, I’ll tell you…it worked great. 😁

These DIY string Christmas trees are easy to make with just a few easy steps.
I started with basic craft foam shapes:
I used a hot glue gun to attach the yard to the bottom of the cone first:
I started the first line of yarn about an inch from the bottom because this yarn drapes a lot.
I stepped about 3/4 inch to 1 inch in each pass around the cone:
Simply make a bead of hot glue and then gently press the top of the string along the glue.
I just kept wrapping… This was a cool mindless craft to do while watching TV.
When I got to the top of the cone, I cut off enough of the excess thread and then wrapped it over the edge with hot glue.
These finger knit things are so forgiving!
I made three different sizes – one was about six inches, one was 11 inches and the final was about 17 inches but I cut those two down a bit:
I used one skein of twine for all the trees and had a few leftover. It’s like a snowy and fluffy forest! 🙂 I think they’re cute.
You don’t even have to do anything to cover the white foam, it disappears behind the thread:
I laughed every time I finished one. It’s great, super easy and inexpensive!
Foam products are often on sale, or you can use a coupon at a craft store.
I added some fairy lights I showed you here for some twinkle:
You can also make it glow from “inside” by running those little lights down the strings around the tree:
You can decorate this Christmas tree in many ways!
I wanted to put something simple but fun on this table in our basement and it was perfect!
I’ve gotten very cozy and a bit rustic with the decor there, so it’s a perfect fit:
I love our fluffy “snowy” trees! I think they may have to stick with it next year instead. 🙂

Now I’m going to make a scarf using my leftover yarn! 😉
