Interior designer Rachel Halvorson has always admired Plain English, the British-born cabinetmaker, but it wasn’t until she found a Nashville client who shared her passion for traditional joinery and odd proportions that she was able to collaborate with the company. She worked with American design director Imogen Pritchard and architect C. Brandon Ingram to update a 1966 Georgian house with an open kitchen that blends the brand’s casual English elegance with historic southern Tennessee charm. “The house also has a bit of Brooklyn grit because the owners met in New York,” says Rachel.
This trio of influences led to the design of Shaker-style cabinets, ornate cornices, antique brass hardware and a colour palette of creamy white, pale pink and a dark brown called “burnt toast”. Then there is the unexpected shock of the Crusader green pantry, visible through a skylighted entrance. “We wanted to create a visual connection between the interior and the natural environment,” says Imogen.
Let’s take a closer look.
