I’ve been thinking about the 15 houses we’ve lived in and this is only the third time we’ve had a dedicated laundry room. Not only that, but this room is upstairs and has no landing area for the back door. It’s been the best laundry room we’ve ever had from the start.
Actually painting it and removing the built-in closet that we never used would have been enough, but the room had one of three large south-facing windows on the upper floor and everyone who came up the stairs had this view of a small piece of wall blocking part of the window and it ruined all the symmetry.
Then this view (taken through the small door leading to the master bathroom) had the opposite problem – it’s a shame there wasn’t a small section of wall there opposite the dryer to put appliances in.
So I had the repair guy cut that piece out of the wall (you can see where it is in the middle of the photo above) and move it next to the dryer. He had to rewire some light switches and move the thermostat, but it worked!
This is the view I wanted through this door!!
I decided to panel the walls. Rule #57 in the house is: When in doubt, do it. I had already paneled the walls in four other places in the house, so it made sense to do it here as well.
Here we are with the beadboard, the tongue and groove ceiling, and since these floors are adjacent to five other rooms, I wasn’t ready to make a long-term decision. So I decided to use peel and stick tiles temporarily.
I drilled vents into the existing cabinets for purely aesthetic reasons.
It’s not quite finished but it’s finished enough to share for now. It’s charming and feels right in our Victorian home.
Last time: Here’s the view before we move the little wall…
…and here then. This open door leads to an additional small room, and the door on the right leads to a small hall with a bathroom and then to the stairs.
