Weeding season has already begun, and if, like me, it’s a struggle to keep up with the relentless task, I have a tool you might want to try. Enter the Root Killer.
My dandelion garden was out of control and starting to wreak havoc in my flower beds. So, in utter desperation, I called on a great advocate in the form of my professional gardening mother. She brought with her her favorite weeding weapon: The Root Slayer. I can safely say I’m a convert.
If you’re an experienced gardener, you’ll know all about the intricacies of successful root removal to avoid weeding mistakes, and it usually involves a root saw and a set of shears which seems a bit complicated/intimidating to garden newbies (like me). Fortunately, this is where Root Slayer comes in very handy.

Using a Root Slayer shovel
The Root Slayer is designed like a shovel but with serrated sides so you can do a variety of garden jobs like digging, sawing, cutting, chopping, and chopping.
Plus, it’s also extremely comfortable with an O-shaped handle that Radius says “features four times the gripping surface of traditional tools,” so you can say goodbye to sore wrists, making it great for those with aches and pains. Talk about an easy garden idea, huh?
The end of the spade has a curved, inverted-V edge that penetrates the roughest ground making it very easy to dig, while the serrated sides of the blade cut through the roots. When pushed down and forward, the roots rise straight out of the ground without any effort. I’m not even exaggerating.
And it doesn’t stop there. The Root Slayer is also really useful if you’ve hit roots while trying to plant perennials, got stuck in the way of roots when trying to dig up a bush, or tried to propagate peonies by dividing with a spade only to have them slip away from your shovel, this tool will make that gardening work easier It’s easy.
Take dandelion removal, for example. A large dandelion plant can be removed quickly, and the entire parsnip-like root will be cleaned from the ground. Weeding has never been so satisfying and, dare I say, fun.
So, instead of spending a lot of time on my hands and knees weeding, I now use this instead and honestly, it’s a game changer this weeding season.
Although I’ve only tried the original Root Slayer shovel, there are a range of other Root Slayer tools available with specific root killing properties and features, so there’s a convenient root killing tool for your specific garden needs.
If there’s one thing for sure, it’s that we’ll be referring to this handy tool all season long. And all I can say is, thanks, mom!
