Wood is a natural material but with the use of chemicals, it becomes dangerous. The main reason for using chemicals is to make it look more shiny and lustrous.
Now I can explain a little.
We divide it into two parts, the first is the production process, i.e. the production of furniture from wood, and the second is the polishing process, which we can also call the finishing part.
1) So let’s start with the first step in the production part:-
The production processes require chemicals but that is okay, this can be modified by living organisms, it starts with treating the wood with methyl bromide which saves the wood from the borer then glue is used to hold the joint and connect the boards to make them to size so that all the raw pieces are produced.
2) Finishing process:-
This process begins with sanding, and sanding is done using sandpaper made of paper and glass, and sandpaper is used with different grits starting from No. 60 to No. 80, 120, 220, and 300, and in some cases reaching No. 600 or 1000 sandpaper.
After sanding is complete, it’s time to use the tint, which is a mixture of dyes and thinner. The three main ingredients in the thinner are turpentine (distilled from pine trees), acetone (nail polish remover), and toluene (distilled from crude oil).
After staining, it is time to fill the wood grain sealer, which is done by sealer, there are many types of sand sealers available in the market such as NC sealer, melamine sealer, polyurethane sealer, water-based sealer, etc. Some companies make them with lead mixing and some companies make them without lead. The amount of application depends on the finish, the greater the finish required, the more sealer is needed for application. Sealer can be applied by hand or by spray gun. According to our experience, it is recommended to apply by spray gun in a spray booth for better finish and less health problems for workers.
After the sealant is done, it is time to apply the finishing touches that have the maximum impact on the environment and living organisms. The finishing touches can be applied using varnish (the finish looks good), melamine (the finish is done well), and polyurethane (a laminate-like layer is achieved on the wood). The top coat material contains a high amount of toxic chemicals (but the dosage used is recommended by our government to minimize side effects). The picture below is of a honey-colored melamine layer.
So, from all the above, I hope you have an idea about the finishing process, and based on our recommendation, it is better to use only the painted finish (96% organic furniture production can be achieved), and there are many advantages, including: – It uses very less chemicals i.e. 3-4% compared to the fully finished product. You can easily refinish it with wax (which has very low side effects).
So your next question is what is just a stain, can it have different shades? Organic Furniture Production Process
Yes, it has different shade, and this process is completed at the dyeing stage. You just need to rub it by hand after dyeing. In this finish we can feel the natural wood, 100% wood grains are visible with less chemicals used. Below I have added a dye sample just for your reference, I hope this information can help you choose organic furniture for your home If you need more details, please email us at:- [email protected] Or WhatsApp on +91 8640040029
Side effects of chemicals used in furniture manufacturing include burning eyes and lungs, sometimes the smell of paint causes stomach pain, and when the chemical is wet it sticks to the skin and needs to be cleaned properly with a solvent.
Some other related questions:-
a) Is organic furniture and sustainable furniture the same thing?
Sustainable furniture means that the raw materials used are purchased legally i.e. furniture made from dead trees or trees grown by farmers or recycled wood if used is known as sustainable furniture, on the other hand, organic furniture is completely different which specifies the amount of chemicals used in making the furniture, less use of chemicals means that the percentage of organic furniture is higher (100 percent organic furniture production is not possible but a conscious user can reduce the risks by up to 95 to 97 percent).
b) Where can I buy organic furniture?
You can buy organic furniture from anywhere if you have the knowledge, and you can also take help from The Home Dekor to buy organic furniture. Just read this blog carefully and inform the manufacturer that the furniture is finished without chemicals.
c) Is organic furniture more expensive?
The best part is that it costs less, it is the only product on earth that if you buy it organic it costs less because the cost of the expensive chemicals used is subtracted from the final cost.
d) Corrosion and damage to organic furniture
Organic furniture is easy to repair and refinish, it is very easy and cost effective. So you do not have to worry about wear and tear.
e) Does organic solid wood furniture need extra care?
No, in fact, it requires less care compared to chemically treated or finished furniture.
e) What is the best type of wood for producing organic furniture?
Acacia, sheesham, neem, mango and teak are some of the best woods for producing organic furniture.
c) Is it permissible for young children to kiss furniture?
It is highly discouraged to allow young children to kiss organic or non-organic furniture.
h) Are wooden choppers good for health?
According to our recommendations, the wooden chopper should be made of untreated wood without joints i.e. a single board so that it is 100% natural, in this case, it is very good but the choppers available in malls or online are 99.999% treated with chemicals and the information is not shared. It is better to make your own vegetable chopper, it is simple and easy, just visit any nearby sawmill and buy a piece of wood as per your requirement and use it. It is for our health, so forget about the finish and appearance of the vegetable chopper, use only raw wood board and live a healthy life.
