What movie or TV show has stuck in your mind?
The latest Shogun series. It’s a stunning evocation of the mood of medieval Japan, with glowing landscapes and intricate costumes and textiles in every scene. By contrast, we recently watched the first few episodes of Miami Vice in the 1980s and were struck by the focus on architecture and costumes. It’s a beautifully designed time capsule of the mid-1980s.
What is the best update for your home?
Split air conditioning system. Efficient and increasingly necessary in the hot New England summers.
A simple or budget-friendly design step you wish you knew earlier?
Purchase parts of IKEA furniture to incorporate into custom designs.
My favorite paint color for a bedroom is…
Forever and ever Benjamin Moore Paradise. A light lavender gray, it’s almost imperceptible, but it makes the room look like a glowing cloud. Tranquility in a can.
My unpopular opinion on the design is…
There is no single “right” design or decision. To believe that there is one would bring a great deal of unnecessary stress to the design process. But recognizing that many different paths can all lead to happiness, comfort, and beauty allows design to unfold naturally without the pressure of fear of making mistakes.
What design bothers you?
We try to avoid “visual MSG,” things that catch the eye and provide visual stimulation but don’t give us lasting satisfaction or nourishment. We love the unexpected, the thoughtful, but easily undesigned, things that can come together to create a space that can make its own history.
Our favorite kitchen tool is…
Fish spatula and Cuisinart. Fish spatula because it gives you complete control when cooking in the pan. Cuisinart because it does it all: chop, mince, slice, whip cream. Mine is 15 years old and still works great.
Three words that describe our design style:
Confident, fun, not determined.
First love of design?
Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the Glasgow School.
What item in your closet do you wear on repeat?
Vintage high waisted levis pants.
What is your favorite design store to visit (online or in person)?
Located at 200 Lex in New York City, the gallery is an entire floor of amazing antiques dealers, where you can always have a good time, whether shopping or just browsing.
What was the last thing you bought for your home?
Another lamp! That’s a problem.
Is there something you miss?
Large flat rug designed by Marta Maas Fetterström.
