After two intense months, it’s finally time for The Block contestants to finish designing the interior of their homes – but it won’t be a simple task. With one last bedroom and laundry space, they were moving between quiet retreats and practical work areas… and it quickly proved to be a difficult double.
But while some struggled, others rose to the challenge. So, who won $10,000 and who left the judges feeling like they were looking at a missed opportunity?
Courtney and Grant (first)
Through the barn doors and into a space filled with Kinsman joinery, the judges loved what was effectively a separate apartment within House 2. From the Calm Creation artwork by Freedom to the HomePro sheer and Grafico linen wallpaper, the king-size bed (with Maison Deux checkerboard blanket), and the lounge The adjoining one, which can sleep two more, was a second master suite, the judges said, and a big added value.
In laundry, the compliments keep coming, with the generous Asko washer and dryer (plus cabinetry), perfect for a whole house.
Ricky and Hayden (II)
Bunk and sofa bed? This means Ricky and Hayden’s house can now sleep 12 people – a big plus the judges said. With Grafico wallpaper, Kinsman cabinets, and HomePro sheer coverings, the boys created a new living space, perfect as a teen suite—especially considering the adjacent game room!
But although they were already impressed, it was the wash that stunned the judges. The judges said: “Multi-day storage, ample seating space, great appliances, and with so many kids to go around, this is the laundry you need!” Add to that the powder room with a pedestal sink from Nood Co., and Darren calls this business “Ricky and Haydn V2.0” and loves every bit of it.
Kylie and Brad (third)
With its bold striped Grafico wallpaper, “perfect” wall sconces and Kylie and Brad’s trademark dark-hued Kinsman cabinets, the judges loved the new 4-bedroom home, especially the Corinne Melanie artwork, Rug Addiction rug and Black Mango dressing bench. But not planning and planning.
“The bedroom needs to feel cozy and give you a hug, but this week’s bedroom doesn’t do that,” Marty said. He said the bed was too close to the door and ignored the possible view. Sheena added that without the covers, the echo was noticeable.
In the laundry but everyone liked it. “Calm and discreet,” Darren summed up as he took in the Kinsman cabinet that hides high-end Miele appliances, a Dekton splashback and a robot cleaner on standby. “It’s a very functional space – without displaying functionality.”
Christian and Mimi (4th)
With a banana color palette, rattan furniture and ample Kinsman storage space, Mimi and Christian created a beautiful bedroom… but was a bedroom needed at all, the judges said? “It’s great,” said Shayna, admiring two stunning B.Twomey artworks, Kinsman cabinets and a Block Shop Cotton Star armchair, “but is it true?” Marty pointed out that there was a living room in the plans, which was just what the house needed.
However, the laundry impressed them. “I didn’t even know I wanted eco-friendly laundry appliances before today,” Darren said while picking up an LG Washtower washer and dryer set from e&s, “but now I do!” With plenty of storage — vital for the poolside space — and perfect carpentry and Dekton tile, this was the daily wash Marty added, even with the missing caulk.
Maddie and Charlotte (last)
The design was perfect and the plan was inspiring, the judges thought when they arrived at No. 1, but it seemed like it was too much for sisters Maddy and Charlotte, whose bedroom was unfinished.
The idea of four extra beds caught Darren’s attention, adding: “The craftsmanship of making a bed is amazing,” but even the beautiful Kinsman dresser and Michelle Kelly’s artwork weren’t enough for Marty and Sheena. They thought it wasn’t luxurious enough, and they let the house down.
In the sink and all was approved for mudroom access and French style tile, but where were the appliances? The LG Styler cabinet was still boxed, along with a washer and dryer, but it’s hard to judge its effectiveness, the judges said, when it’s not in place. They decided that this was a rare miss for girls.
