Remember the jute rug in the kitchen dining area with the decorative edge? I loved the detail around the edge, but I have some sad news.
After about a year of being on a busy track, the seams around the corners started to come apart. I’ve learned that this is the type of track that is best used in a room where people and animals won’t be walking on the corners all day. I probably should have noticed the wear and managed the track to extend its life, but it was becoming a tripping hazard. The lucky thing about jute rugs, though, is that they are inexpensive, so I don’t have to worry about them wearing out. Most of my jute rugs have lasted for several years, and the one I had the longest (about 8 years) I sold with our last home and I imagine it is still in service. This was just a case of a nice rug in the wrong place.
So, I picked a new rug. I looked at a few non-jute options, but old decorating habits die hard, so I decided to go with jute again. This time, I chose a small square rug to add more pattern to this corner.
I love the look of it, and if you recall, it refers to the dining room rug, which is also a jute checkerboard. Although the dining room rug is a bit small for this space, so I will likely swap it out as I work on the room.

I was also very excited to cut the first late-season Annabelle hydrangea blooms from the bushes I planted this spring to dry. I loved having dried hydrangeas in our last home and using them for fall and winter decorations. I didn’t want to cut too many bushes this year because they were still growing, but there were some blooms already drying on the bushes, so I cut them. You can read my post about drying hydrangeas here . I tested a few different methods and shared what worked best and was easiest.
I just had to share with you the most beautiful antique European glass cover that Maria from Dreamy Whites sent me. She knows I put a lot of work into my garden and said she had just the right glass cover to send me. It’s so gorgeous I don’t know if I’ll have the courage to actually use it outside!
I have admired large glass covers like this for decades. I have been moving them from place to place so far to see how they look in different places in different rooms until they find their perfect home. Of course, once we have a small garden, I may take them out there every now and then. I am sure they have been used in the garden for several seasons and have been fine as long as they are not left outside during the winter.
I was hoping to start painting the dining room ceiling yesterday or today, but my back was hurting from putting together a new bed frame for Calvin (his feet were hanging from his double bed) and moving a dining table I bought for the dining room. Now I remember how my back hurt almost every day when I was mainly working on furniture and why I stopped doing this full time! My back can’t take much! The heating pad and comfort have helped, and I hope to be able to start painting the ceiling later this week to get this project started.
