Your bedroom is a sanctuary and at center stage, your bed should be the ultimate source of comfort and support. But, like running shoes, your new mattress has a break-in period. And yes, it’s a thing. Here’s everything you need to know about committing the ultimate sleep crime, “Break into your mattress!” (Bond music playing)
But why?
Your brand-new mattress has not yet become soft, and it has had enough time to adjust to your body shape and sleeping style. Not only does a resting period allow the mattress to soften and fit your body, but your body also needs time to adjust to a new mattress. Depending on the mattress you had before, your body may have overcompensated to make you feel comfortable. After the rest period, you will feel the full, intended comfort of the mattress.
How long does it take to break in a new mattress?
Rest times vary for individual mattresses. This depends mainly on the type of material from which the mattress is made. High-density memory foam is an excellent example and can take much longer to break down than traditional beds. The average breakout period is 30 days. However, a high-quality mattress with dense memory foam may take up to 60 days to break down. The density of the foam is responsible for this, requiring more time for the foam cells to open.
Top drawer tips for faster break-in
Air your mattress
Once your new mattress has inflated, it may appear to be ready for use. Often times, in the case of a Sloom mattress, it has just been released from the pressure in its packaging. Many new mattresses can give off a slight chemical odor when first opened, which is normal. In this case, don’t make your bed yet! Before putting on your linens, it’s a good idea to give your mattress a few hours to air out. Opening windows or turning on a fan helps. The smell of a new mattress can have an impact on the quality of your sleep the first night, which can hamper your overall feelings about it. So let it breathe first, then start testing it.
Check your base
Make sure your base provides adequate support and is the right size for your mattress. An uneven base or insufficient support under the mattress can affect how the mattress feels.
Make time for your new mattress
Sleep on it every night and spend as much time as possible on your new mattress. Read, take a nap, or work in bed for a few days if you can. All this helps the elasticity of the material and foam for faster penetration.
Add some warmth
A warmer room will help soften the mattress, especially in the case of memory foam.
Add some weight
Now that’s something we don’t hear very often! (Laughs) Well, in this case, walking on your bed (this is a real thing) or adding some books or boxes will help your mattress soften and become more elastic faster.
What is Sloom made of and how many days will it take to break into it?
The Sloom mattress consists of 4 distinct layers of foam. Each layer of foam provides a unique firmness density.
The top layer (also soft layer) of the Sloom mattress, as delivered, is made of ultra-dense memory foam. Then there’s the latex middle layer, which has more bounce than other foams and reduces body heat buildup. Next, the firm layer is made of pure high-density foam, providing a medium-firm feel. Finally, the hard layer is also made of pure high-density foam with increased density in this layer.
All layers of the Sloom mattress are made with high-density foam without the use of any fillers, which is why we recommend giving your new Sloom mattress 60 days to break in.
Due to the quality and density of the foam we use to extend the life of the mattress, the Sloom mattress requires a longer break-in period. Therefore, our return policy allows customers to return their mattress for 60 to 100 nights of sleep on their bed, allowing enough time for rest, reflecting the true feel of the mattress.
