Spring is here and it’s time to get rid of those cold winter woes in your home. Spring cleaning is a must and the best place to start is in your bedroom! Here we share some great spring cleaning tips to get your bed ready for the new season. Get inspired by Sealy.
If you use warm flannel sheets for the winter, now is a good time to alternate between using cooler sheets and duvet covers. To avoid “laundry stress,” wash your sheets one room at a time, which will also make storage easier. (See below for more storage tips.)
Good quality bedding will last longer if it is properly cared for. Here are some of our top tips for spring cleaning your bed:
Follow care instructions.
Look at the care label on your sheets or on the packaging to see what material your sheets are made from. Follow the instructions to prevent shrinkage, pilling, or damage to the fabric. Sealy sheets are durable and long-lasting, made from 100% natural, breathable percale cotton. Percale cotton sheets and most other materials require cold or lukewarm water.
Linen sheets should be washed on a gentle cycle in warm water, while silk sheets should be washed on a gentle cycle in cold water.
Pre-treat stains
If your sheets have any stains, pre-treat them with a stain remover. You can also try using a home remedy like apple cider vinegar mixed with water or baking soda.
Loading the washing machine
Do not mix bed linens with other clothes, to ensure that the zippers and clips do not damage the bed linens. Follow the recommended load size for your machine and be careful not to overload the machine to avoid twisting and stretching the bed linens. If the bed linens are very dirty, it is better to wash them in smaller loads.
Dry your bedding
To avoid wrinkles, remove sheets from the washer as soon as the wash cycle is complete. If you are using a clothes dryer, use a low to medium heat. Avoid high heat as it can cause the bedding to shrink. Again, remove sheets as soon as the drying cycle is complete to avoid wrinkles. If wrinkles have already formed, add a damp towel to the washer and dry a little longer.
However, with the wonderful weather in South Africa, it is better for the environment and for the bedding to air dry. Hang the bedding on a line, preferably out of direct sunlight. Fold the bedding and store it once it is off the line.
iron the bed covers
This extra step is debatable – however, experts recommend ironing your bed sheets because the heat helps kill any remaining germs or bacteria. Use a low to medium heat setting.
linen storage
There are several options available for storing bed linens. Find one that will help you keep your space organized and save you time when searching for specific bed linens. Here are some of our top picks:
Place folded sheets inside the matching pillowcase, along with the second pillowcase. Store folded sheets in labeled storage boxes. Label the boxes according to the size of the bed or bedroom. Store linens in their designated bedroom.
How often should I wash my sheets?
The answer to this question varies depending on the season, who is sleeping in the bed, their hygiene practices, and whether there are pets sleeping in the bed. Naturally, we sweat more in the summer than in the winter. However, some people have naturally higher body temperatures and may sweat throughout the night regardless. It’s best to shower before bed, so your body is clean and your sheets stay fresher longer.
Experts recommend washing your bedding every week. Consider having three sets of bedding per bed, so you can change your sheets regularly and help your sheets last longer. It’s gross but true: As you sleep, your body sheds dead skin cells, oils, and bodily fluids. These particles put stress on the fibers of your bedding and also attract dust mites. So when deciding how often to wash your bedding, choose to wash it more often.
You can protect your mattress from dust mites with a mattress protector. This is an extra layer between your sheets and your mattress and can also be easily cleaned in the washing machine. Keep your mattress stain-free with a Sealy mattress protector. Choose between the Sealy Soft Touch Bamboo mattress protector or the Sealy Cleanshield Quilted mattress protector, both of which are made with a four-way elastic skirt to fit snugly around your bed.
