I read this book expecting it to be my favorite summer read. I even read it on a beach trip by myself, using all my precious alone time to read. And the result? (I know this is a mixed bag for most people) I found myself somewhere between being extremely disappointed and an enjoyable read.
I felt deeply connected to the central theme of the book: a family vacation to a special place. My familyโs cabin on Michiganโs northern island stuck with me, reminding me of my favorite childhood memories. But what resonated with me more than anything else were the well-crafted layers of the story and the โsandwichโ metaphor throughout. Both literally and figuratively. The sandwich of life can be applied in many ways: past and present linking together โdestruction and blessing.โ As a mother, the simple, sweet moments mean more to me than ever (my bread), and I know the power they have to hold me together through lifeโs mixed joys and sorrows.
And then, of course, comes the trip to Sandwich, Massachusetts, a simple little coastal town? I can’t get enough of that feeling. And how about making real sandwiches to eat on the beach? Honestly, that’s the beauty of life.
Other than that, the drama of Rocky and the entire cast of characters that scream franchise can be annoying at times.
Where do you stand on this? I generally “liked” it. Are you on the love, like, or hate team? Let’s talk!
First, take a look at how I envision the country house. Discussion questions will follow.
