It’s been a while since I’ve done a drawing tutorial, and even though this was just a sketch to get back into the oil painting mood, I decided to set up my camera and turn it into a tutorial. In fact, it’s more of a long-form drawing than a tutorial because I don’t consider myself an expert when it comes to drawing flowers! It’s definitely not my favorite subject when it comes to oil painting, but it’s a popular subject so I decided to keep working on it even though I felt it wasn’t my strong suit.
This painting was done in about 40 minutes, so I consider it more of a sketch than a finished painting. My goal wasn’t to have something that looked elaborate and detailed, but rather an impressionistic, simplified, and loose painting. I focused on blocking out the larger shapes and adding details only where necessary so that I didn’t get too lost and get tied down in detail.
It’s not one of my favorite paintings ever, but it got me into painting, I learned from it, and I don’t hate it just the way it is. Sometimes, that’s a win when painting on an easel!
