Bree and Ty Craine were brave enough to look for something different in their new home collection and it has certainly paid off! Designing each bedroom, en-suite and wardrobe walls with a plaster finish, with backlit viewing niches behind the bed, was a real DIY challenge. But the results are impressive.
“The idea of using Spanish design throughout the room and en-suite bathroom was inspired by our love of Latin American culture,” Berry explained. “We lived in Central America in our early 20s and love the architecture and detailed elements of classic buildings. We wanted to replicate that in our own personal style, and bring a bit of the unique culture into our home.”
Ty, a builder, completed an extension to their Sunshine Coast home, expanding from two to four bedrooms. With a little expert help, they were eager to try the display themselves as a finishing touch to their master suite.
“Our model friend Jake Torrisi came to us and we played around with the type of width and finish we wanted. We both loved the natural color with a textured finish. It gave the room and bathroom a unique look as we hand-carved it exactly the way we wanted it,” says Brie.
The couple is thrilled with the end result, particularly the cohesive flow through the bedroom, en-suite and den. “It makes life easy and practical,” says Brey. “We love the seamless design, the high-angled skylights in the den and bathroom, the balcony overlooking a dense forest, the outlets and the whimsical feel of it.”
It wasn’t easy though! “The world of feature rendering is a deep dive in terms of product style and presentation. There are so many different products, colors and finishes, and you won’t be able to decide what look you want to create until you play with it. So once we chose the presentation, we then focused on the texture we liked.
The feature wall with niches was the most challenging. “The niches required a lot of framing within the walls, and to achieve depth, a double wall had to be built. The niches are lit using LEDs attached to the base, so this was also time-consuming but looks very effective,” says Bry.
Bree and Ty love it so much they now plan to open up the front of their home, which they share with their three young children, and finish the exterior with a similar Spanish look. “Before our bedroom, we finished with laundry that has a similar design to our bedroom with a rustic wall. We would like to continue this theme throughout the house and create a consistent flow.”
The feedback from friends and family has been gratifyingly positive, making the couple very proud of their efforts! “The house is located behind a nature reserve, and there is nothing to see upstairs except the woods. It is truly a very unique room that was designed and built with a lot of hard work and love. My husband is so happy that it is completed!”
