Not only was the room mostly white (in stark contrast to Tracy’s colorful vision for the space), but it wasn’t the most functional space either. It was important, when she thought about updating the space, to maximize storage space — something she said was lackluster at first.
The interior cabinets originally didn’t have any built-in storage features (but it’s a lot of wasted space), an unused microwave was taking up former counter space, the faucet was too close to the edge of the sink and water was splashing everywhere, making small gaps between appliances and counters Cleaning up the mess was difficult, and the lighting was “outdated,” Tracy says. Although she liked the layout and didn’t want to “overhaul it all,” she wanted to focus on “improving the use of the space, maximizing its potential, and making small adjustments to match the aesthetic of the apartment.”
Over the course of a month, Tracy began making smart updates to the space. For starters, she added a shelf holder on the countertop, as well as a cabinet near the entryway that serves as a coffee station, traditional entry table, and home bar all in one.
The unused microwave has been removed and is now the perfect place to display Tracey and her partner’s tea collection. The original faucet was replaced with a mobile sprayer, and stainless steel gap covers were installed to make cleaning easier.
“Plus, the extra dining countertop is invaluable; it expands our countertop while cooking, serves as a bar counter when we have guests over, and seamlessly connects the kitchen to the living area,” Tracy says.
And it wasn’t just the room’s functionality that got an upgrade — Tracy also infused the space with colors that flow with the rest of the eclectic home. Sprig & Heron wallpaper from York Wallcoverings and custom blue-green paint created by The Home Depot add depth and excitement to the room. Bamboo shelves and new wood appliances add warmth to the room, too.
The couple loves to cook, and they’re thrilled with all the clever ways the kitchen has become more livable.
