Happy Sunday everyone. We’ve done our best to bring you some very exciting design content just for you which includes three offerings over the next two weeks! Tomorrow it will start with our photographer’s beautiful living room. We hope they bring a smile to your face. Okay, let’s get to this week’s links.
This week’s home tour is on the way to our favorite home tour of the year. Do yourself a favor and step into SNL’s Heidi Gardner’s dream house in Kansas City. It’s a mid-century modern paradise complete with disco ball shade. We believe enough said 🙂
From Emily: The universe is finally answering all my plaid coat dreams. If you’ve been following closely (thank you) I’ve been wearing the same plaid wool coat with ease for 8-9 years and while it’s still in good condition (the lining is torn) I’ve always been in the market for an extra coat, depending on how many times I wanted to wear it. Sure I’ve been tempted by others and I’ve liked some of them enough, but I’ve recently found two that tick the box, unlike most of the others. This plaid coat (with cobalt accents) drapes really well, feels tailored around the shoulders, comes up a little, and then just drapes. It’s super flattering and easy to wear, which is the goal! The outfit should slip on easily but still be comfortable. I really don’t like when they try to make a body shape with it or have too much binding – I want to be able to layer it under it without it looking shabby!! For this coat, I’m wearing a size I was going to replace it, but I found the cut/fit besides that to be so good I don’t really need to button it up (if it was colder I would have worn a jacket more). But the point is, I think it’s the perfect size. Now, this other one is really good too – nice construction in the shoulders, easy to button (wearing a size small) and then unbutton. It’s easiest to layer over a sweatshirt or thin jacket and instantly makes a basic outfit look cool, youthful, and stylish. I almost consider it a thicker, longer jacket – because it’s so comfortable and mid-weight – it doesn’t feel as hot when you go to the grocery store or on the subway.
From Caitlin: This week, Dean and I scored invitations to the premiere of a wonderful new documentary called The World According to Allie Willis. Allie was a prolific songwriter — she wrote “September,” “Boogie Wonderland,” “Friends,” and the entire soundtrack to the Broadway play “The Color Purple,” to name a few — but she also struggled to realize her enormous ambition with the limited opportunities available to her as a woman. (Prescient, huh?) I laughed out loud (the celebrity interviews are incredible – everyone from Mark Cuban to Patti LaBelle!) (The very talented director, Alexis Spraic, invited us to tour Allee’s 1930s Moderne home a few days ago From watching the film – more on that here – and it was exceptional. If the story doesn’t leave you inspired, Allee’s interiors certainly will.) The documentary was just the motivation I needed – so bright! Very human! So loving! -And I have a feeling you’ll like it too. See it in theaters this week or stream it next weekend – it’s worth the 90 minutes, I promise!
Also from Caitlin: Here’s a not-so-exciting reminder to use your FSA/HSA funds before the end of the year! ICYMI, you can use your money on some Amazon purchases. We just bought a Theragun (incredible – the app makes it so easy), an endless supply of tampons, and enough Supergoop sunscreen to stock a medium to large storefront. Look for FSA/HSA labels on the right side of each page (or just enter them in the search) to find all eligible products.
Bath mat | Ultra plush robe and towel set | Terry slippers
Brooklinen’s super fun collaboration with KULE was a fun surprise when we saw it! If you love classic lines and fun aesthetics, this collab could be perfect for you (or someone on your list :)) Go check out all the towels, robes, mats, and accessories!
From Arlene: I had to read The Anxious Generation for the book club I lead at my daughter’s preschool, and I think it’s a very important read for all parents. Some of our book club participants didn’t really like the author’s voice or style, but in the end, we all agreed that it was necessary to look beyond any issues with the person presenting the news and take the news for what it’s worth. The book is about the mental health crisis teens face, and why research shows that the shift from a play-based childhood to a phone-dependent childhood (due in part to social media) is to blame. It’s not all doom and gloom, as the book ends with plenty of great, actionable tips and recommendations depending on your child’s age. This is somewhat hard to swallow and, frankly, quite scary at times, but overall, I highly recommend this to anyone with young children or pre-teens/teens.
Blithe Bookends (Set of 2) | Light of the Thuraya | Cascading serving bowl
Another incredibly exciting collaboration that was just announced is Lolly Lolly Ceramics’ collaboration with Lulu and Georgia. Lalese Stamps, founder and owner of Lolly Lolly Ceramics, is an insane talent we’re sure you’ve seen. So to see more of what she can do is pretty cool. We’re so obsessed with lighting but you have to see everything.
From Mallory: I was in desperate need of some everyday bedding (also good timing since Thanksgiving is actually right around the corner!) so I wore these in black while I was at Anthropologie and I am obsessed with parties!! Apparently my friend who was with me when I caught them was “very skeptical” and thought I was making a strange choice. But once I put them on the table and styled them a little, he said he was never wrong about something…they look amazing when they’re together because the shape is so unique and fun. Plus, they come in so many colors (I love black because it’s so forgiving) and can transition from one vacation to the next. Highly recommend!
VELUX (our favorite skylight source) is offering its fall giveaway where you can win two solar-powered fresh-air skylights—the kind you’ve seen on our projects over the past few years—plus shades and installation. We promise they will transform wherever you choose. You have until 11/30 to apply, so go now!
From Gretchen: If you’re looking for an affordable but expensive ball-shaped pillow, this pillow from World Market is great! We shot Kaitlin’s living room this week (the reveal is live tomorrow and it’s one of my favorites). She bought a bunch of new pillows to coordinate her space and they are all so cute! A few of them didn’t make the jigsaw (so many good ones to choose from) but I really walked away wanting this little ball pillow for my home! It’s quite dark and the taupe color is a refreshing take on the boucle.
From Jess: I mentioned to my dad that I really hated my small freezer/no ice cubes. He then went on to mention how he got this awesome ice maker for his Airstream. He liked that the place was very quiet and the design was nice/simple. I was like, “That’s cool, I’ll have to check it out.” Well, I didn’t even get a chance before it arrived on my doorstep on Monday. I’m so lucky to have him as my dad 🙂 I’ve been using it now for a few days and it’s amazing! Getting ice on demand is incredible. They’re smaller so they’re perfect for one person (maybe two) who loves snow. Plus, it’s under $100.
Thanks for stopping by as always and see you tomorrow for the big reveal. xx
