This video produced by Jim Stephenson shows a refurbished gallery in Edinburgh by Reiach and Hall Architects, which has been shortlisted for the RIAS Andrew Doolan Award for Scotland’s Building of the Year.
The film forms the first part of a series of videos Dezeen is publishing this month in collaboration with the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) to highlight the shortlist for the 2024 annual award.
In the video, viewers are introduced to the Fruitmarket Gallery’s renovation, which includes renovating and expanding an existing industrial-style gallery downtown.
Comments from Reiach and Hall Architects director Neil Gillespie and exhibition director Fiona Bradley discuss the project’s focus on the site’s heritage and its continuing role as a ‘vital place’ for the local community.
“The project draws very much from its previous history, and I think what happens is that the thing you’re left with seems more important,” Gillespie said.
“It’s connected to the place and to the previous life of the building so I think it’s a very powerful approach.”
RIAS reveals a five-strong shortlist for the best building in Scotland
The Andrew Dolan Prize for Best Building in Scotland is an annual award that highlights the projects of Scottish architects, and this year’s winner is set to be announced on 22 November.
This year’s shortlist of five nominees emphasizes the reuse of existing buildings, with other regeneration projects shortlisted for the award, including The Burrell Collection designed by John McAslan + Partners and Ardoch by Moxon Architects.
Other projects vying for the title include the University of Aberdeen’s Science and Teaching Centre, also completed by Reiach and Hall Architects, along with the North Gate Social Housing project designed by Page\Park Architects.
