They say you should always live in a house to understand the best you need, before starting any renewal.
The owners of this house in Richmond, 20 years of knowledge, had knowledge to take advantage of time to involve Tsai Design to give him an update that touched the need, in 2021.
The house itself was not fully touched, as the Malcon modernized the kitchen when they first bought it in 2001, then after 10 years, and they sought the living room and added a major wing on the first floor.
Come to 2021, with two teenage children and a new routine from home, the family needed another update-this time to accommodate a larger study, a better flow internally abroad, and more storage.
“We have seen this renewal an opportunity to bring cohesion to the aesthetic of previous renovations,” says Hidy Wong, the architect of design in Tsai.
The project, which was called “The Final Editor”, focused on the ground floor of the house. He left the main and independent living room, Tsai’s design reconfigured the rest of the flooring scheme and reintegrated by the external area as the heart of the house.
“By maintaining the living space in the same place, we removed the current study and bathroom to make room for the kitchen next to the deck, in the face of the living room,” explains Heidi. “We have opened the western wall to enhance the open air contact and put the dining room next to this new opening.”
The deck, which was previously accessible through the living room, is now surrounded by common spaces – living, dining and kitchen all enjoy sunlight and natural breeze, and most importantly, contact with the open air.
The material panel in these spaces reflects this new open design with light blue tanks and pale wooden wood.
As you move through this space to the new study, the carpentry of the full height turns into a darker blue, hiding a secret door for the renovated bathroom.
“The pink bathroom provides a sweet surprise when the secret door is detected,” says Heidi.
But this is not its favorite advantage. It is the smart sliding door that can be closed to divide the double bathroom to reach two separate surfaces, allowing one person to use the toilet while the other can shower at the same time.
“This feature is incredibly practical for a family, which eliminates the morning rush to the bathroom,” says Heidi.
Thanks to the new design, coherent aesthetic, additional storage and improved installation, homeowners really believe that this will be “final liberation”.
