Forget the ornaments, the stars, and even the tree topper. This year, a ‘bare Christmas tree’ is the focus of some of the most stylish decor schemes, including the Victoria Beckham store on Dover Street.
Christmas tree trends were divided into two camps this year: maximalism and minimalism. The ultimate Christmas tree ideas fall in bows, new ornaments and vines. In contrast, the minimalist Christmas camp has embraced the bare Christmas tree trend. It’s the exact opposite, where all the ornaments are stripped away and only soft fairy lights are left behind.
The overall look exudes quiet luxury – it is simple and sophisticated, producing a beautifully subtle and effective appearance.
In an Instagram post last week, Victoria Beckham revealed a stunning take on the bare Christmas tree in her Dover Street store designed by interior designer Rose Uniacke. The luscious dark green fir tree is decorated with soft glowing fairy lights, to make the tree sparkle.
Other celebrities like Michelle Pfeiffer and Kourtney Kardashian have embraced the chic Christmas tree trend. But what makes this simple decorating technique so effective?
“For those not into the festive atmosphere, the trend that looks most likely to continue to rise in popularity this year is bare trees,” comments Jennifer Deary, interior design expert and head of merchandising at Balsam Hill.
“Just like the ‘quiet luxury’ interior design trends we’ve seen peak in previous years, this trend focuses on investing in quality for a minimalist look with timeless appeal.”
You can achieve this trend by using a real tree and lots of fairy lights. Instead, the smart trick is to invest in one of the best pre-lit artificial trees, so you can have your tree up in record time while still achieving that warm, cozy glow.
However, if you go the route of designing fairy lights on a real tree this year, there are a few tricks to keep in mind. “To effectively style a bare Christmas tree, choose fairy lights in warm white or soft colors to enhance the natural beauty of the tree,” explains Michal Kowalski, creative director at Blooming Haus.
‘Choose a tree with a strong shape and healthy foliage. Place lights evenly for a balanced look, and consider complementing them with natural elements like pinecones or a simple tree skirt.’

This trend relies on fairy lights and choosing a beautiful, dense tree with a classic teardrop shape. One of our favorite home influencers @av.home who created a dangerously bare Christmas tree last year revealed that we used 10,500 lights to achieve the final look, so don’t skimp on the lights.
Habitat 7ft Pre-Lit Mixed Top Dew Drop Christmas Tree
A pre-lit tree is the simplest way to achieve this trend. To date, this is the most visited pre-lit tree habitat on the site. It’s easy to see why.

Warm-colored lights are the best way to pull off this trend – they’re cozy and inviting, which is everything Christmas should be.
Osby Star LED Tree Topper and Small Christmas Tree Lights
Make the top of your tree part of the look with this LED tree topper attached to a curtain of small lights that cascade down the tree from above.
So, which side are you on? Will you stick to the sparkling ornaments and flowers, or have you been blown away by the bare Christmas tree trend?
